MOD/RSLAF KEY MESSAGE ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW INFANTRY BRIGADE IN THE EASTERN REGION 26 SEPTEMBER 2019, ISSUE NO. 1 ...

MOD/RSLAF KEY MESSAGE ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW INFANTRY BRIGADE IN THE EASTERN REGION

1. MoD/RSLAF would like the public to know that it has already commenced implementing the plan to establish a new infantry brigade in the Eastern Region. The new Brigade Headquarters will be located in Kenema with a component of three infantry battalions, which will be deployed to operationally cover Kenema, Kailahun and Kono Districts.

2. As the first step in implementing the plan, three senior military officers have been designated to spearhead the new infantry brigade. Colonel AS Bockarie has been appointed as Acting Brigade Commander with Lieutenant Colonel HS Jalloh and Lieutenant Colonel MAB Koroma as Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff respectively.

3. The establishment of the new infantry brigade is done in accordance with the current review of the MoD/RSLAF structure, which calls for re-establishing an infantry brigade in every region across the country.

4. MoD/RSLAF would like the public to recall that by the end of the bloody Civil War in 2002, RSLAF had a total of 17,000 military personnel with a structure of four infantry brigades. With the then structure, an infantry brigade was located in each of the four administrative regions, namely the West, North, South and East.

5. However, in 2006 it became prudent that there was a need to scale down the RSLAF. Thus, a Working Group Committee was established to review the size and structure of RSLAF, among other things.

6. In accordance with the recommendations of the Working Group Committee, RSLAF was downsized to the strength of 8,500 personnel with a new structure of three infantry brigades across the country.

7. Hence, 3 Infantry Brigade was established to operationally cover the entire Western Area and Kambia District in the North, 4 Infantry Brigade to cover the entire Northern Region and Kono Disrict in the East and 5 Infantry Brigade to cover the entire Southern Region, Kenema and Kailahun Districts in the East.
